RECEIVING A SACRAMENT for the first time is an important day in a child’s religious development. That’s why parents play an essential role in sacramental preparation.
Here’s some general information about Sacrament Preparation:
- Parents must fill out a “Sacrament Intent Form” for each student who is receiving a sacrament for the first time this year.
- Parents’ example of regular attendance at Mass and reception of the sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation are crucial.
- Catechists and parents work together to provide the instruction and guidance needed. Parents are expected to work with catechists to determine if their children are ready for each sacrament.
- Curriculum and guidelines for preparation are provided by the Archdiocese and the parish.
- Parents are required to attend the Parent Instruction Session for each sacrament received.
- Students usually receive Reconciliation and Communion in 2nd grade, and Confirmation in 8th. Special arrangements can be made for students in other grades who need preparation.
- Sacraments require a two-year preparation process. That’s why ongoing religious education is important.
