The Sacrament of Baptism becomes the basis of our Christian life, the gateway to life in the Holy Spirit, and the door which allows us to experience the other sacraments of the church. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons and daughters of God. By being baptized, we become members of the Catholic Church and our parish family.
Parents seeking to have their child baptized at SVdP must first be registered members of the parish. Baptisms are typically held the second and third Sundays of each month.
Is this your first child baptized at SVdP?
If so, you are required to register and attend the baptism preparation class entitled, Belonging, which typically takes place on the fourth Sunday of the month from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. See instructions in the section below.
*Note: Parishioners having their second and subsequent children baptized are not required to attend again. However, parents are more than welcome to attend the class, as it is a great opportunity to meet other parishioners with young children and enjoy camaraderie.
Godparents have a very important responsibility in helping your child grow in their faith. The qualifications for a godparent set forth by the Archdiocese of Omaha help you as parents choose the most appropriate people in your life to accomplish that goal.
Who do you choose as your child’s Godparents?
Godparents must be registered in a parish, be at least 16 years of age, have received the sacraments of Baptism, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation in the Catholic Church, and if married, were married in the Catholic Church. The most recent addition of being a registered parishioner, we find very important. Being connected to a parish community is vital in establishing a foundation to help others grow in their faith. One godparent, male or female, is sufficient, but there may be two, one of each gender.
